Feature Friday- Runners part 6

Well look at that, it's Friday again and not only am I excited about the weekend, hot yoga, a blogger meetup and a long run that I intend to dominate BUT its also Feature Friday and that pretty much makes its a perfect day, wouldn't you say?

This week we've got two more fabulous ladies with super inspiring stories to tell, so enough from me already!

Mary- Mommy on the Run

Mary has been running for the better part of the last fifteen years, but is just getting back into the swing of things after being interrupted by injury and new motherhood. She blogs over at Return of the Runner  about running, writing, mothering, and trying to balance it all.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I first started running in high school as conditioning for my other sports, tennis and crew. I toyed with the idea of trying out for the cross country team, but never considered myself a "real" runner back then so stuck with the sports I knew I was good at. I don't think I considered myself a real runner until I finished my first half-marathon when I was 31 years old, even though I'd been running on and off for years by then.

What top 3 things do you love most about running?

I love that it can be done anywhere. I travel a lot for work, and mostly to developing countries. If I insisted on having an elliptical machine or a tennis court to be able to get my workout in, I'd spend a lot more time watching crappy satellite TV in hotel rooms.

I love that even if you half-ass a run, you still end up getting a pretty good workout in. You can go to an aerobics class and leave without breaking a sweat if you aren't in the mood to give it your all. But even if you normally run five, eight-minute miles and you slack off and only run three, ten-minute miles, you're still doing something good for yourself.

I love the way I feel when I'm done.

What is one obstacle you overcame to become a stronger runner?

Well, I don't know if I'm a stronger runner yet, but I'm on my way... I ran a half marathon when I was pregnant with my son (along with a sign on my back that said, "If you can read this, you're slower than a pregnant woman." heehee.) and by the end of it, even though I'd definitely trained enough for it, my knee was aching. By the next day I could barely walk. Either because of the extra weight I was carrying, or because of the way pregnancy hormones effect your tendons, I'd given myself a bad case of ITB syndrome (runner's knee). I've battled it ever since. Between the ITB syndrome and being a new mother, my running took a nosedive in the past couple years. But I've recently recommitted and am signed up for a 5K on 8/27 and a 10K in October.

The reason these setbacks have made me a stronger runner is that they've made me have to fight to be a runner. I used to say, "Anyone can be a runner. You just put one foot in front of the other." But overcoming these obstacles has made me more proud of my status as a runner and that motivates me to stick with it.

What's your favorite running memory?

Running my first half marathon with my two best friends and my husband. It was such a sense of accomplishment and I'm so glad I shared the experience with them.

Would you rather be able to run 5km really quickly or 50km at a slow and steady pace?

I'd say because I'm not a fast runner and never have been, that running a 5K in under 20 minutes is a fun daydream to have!

What's one tip you would give to a new runner or someone coming back after a break?

Remember that running is like life: There will be good runs and there will be bad runs. Accept that. Enjoy the good runs and brush off the bad ones. Either way, you're only as good as your next run.

Briana- Nurse on the Go!

Briana is originally from Michigan and currently lives in Indiana with my husband of 3 years and their goldendoodle. She keeps busy as a family nurse practitioner and works at the local hospital in town in internal medicine.  When she isn't running and keeping people healthy she likes traveling, reading, blogging, wine, sweets, gossip mags, sunshine, hugs, and family time. You can catch her over at Nurse with a Purse.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I grew up playing sports like softball and lacrosse. I was always able to sprint well, but distance running never came naturally. It wasn't until winter 2009 that I decided to (wo)man up and sign up for my first 5K. I was inspired by my friend, Amy, a running superhero in my mind (hey, anyone who runs sub 4-hr marathons is unbelievable; and especially a 3.5!). I did nearly all of my training on the treadmill and followed no specific training schedule. I just got out there and ran. I felt completely unprepared at the start, but found myself dashing down the strip and back in 27:30, light years faster than I had ever imagined. I didn't even get a medal and I was hooked. I love Amy for giving me the running bug!

What keeps you motivated to run?

I'm extremely happy with the way I feel both mentally and physically since I've become a runner, so maintaining that is a huge motivator. Also, just being a part of the online running community keeps me on track. I've started this new thing via Twitter where I recruit "virtual training" buddies (#virtualtraining). Interested friends and I set up a time and date that we both plan to be running/exercising and make a point to follow up with each other once we're done! It keeps us both accountable for our workouts, especially when it's the last thing we may feel like doing. Shoot me a tweet if you're interested!

Are you training for any races at the moment?

Yes! My first marathon will be the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on 10.9.11. I also have the unbelievable privilege to be raising money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and Team in Training in honor of my late grandmother. She battled hard against her fight with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and so it's only fitting for me to do the same. Only my battle will be on the pavement. I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this amazing organization. Please take a moment to visit my TNT fundraising page here. Go Team!!

What is your favorite distance to run?

So far I have completed 6 half marathons, so I'd have to say that is my preferred distance. Ask me again on 10.10.11 after 26.2. Then again, don't :)

What top 3 things do you love most about running?

The mental clarity it provides.

The fact that I can pick up wherever I am and just go.

Buying new gear! ["I have an addiction, sir!" ~ Carrie Bradshaw]

What's one tip you would give to a new runner?

I think you'll hear this from a lot of people, but the biggest obstacle to overcome is just getting out there and running. Thomas Jefferson once said "Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today." It's the absolute truth. If you don't make yourself run today, what is going to change by tomorrow? Nothing. To some of us (ahem, me), running doesn't come naturally. Luckily, everyone was born to run. It's just about training your body to do it and do it well. Believe me, the benefits you'll reap are beyond imaginable. I never thought I would be in the physical or mental condition to be training for a full marathon. But here I am, just over 6 weeks away from 26.2 miles. And I couldn't be more excited!

Even if you aren't a runner I can't imagine not being inspired to lace up after reading about these awesome gals!!

If you want to be featured in the Runner Series all you have to do is email health.happiness.skinnyjeansATgmail.com. And remember, this is about runners on all levels so whether you are brand new and working on your first C25K or you've completed an Ironman, we want to hear from you!!!

Happy Friday my friends!!

So tell me, are you doing anything super exciting this weekend? Do tell!

Rebound

"Success isn't how far you got, but the distance you travelled from where you started"

After writing yesterday's post I had the chance to reflect further on running, the race and whether I ever want to lace up my sneakers and hit the pavement ever again.

Dramatic? Yes. A bad race will do that to you.

The answer: I do, with a but. I do but want it to feel good. And not good as in my feet and legs don't hurt at all at the end of this marathon but good as in I am content, positive, accomplished.

Am I afraid that the marathon will go as poorly as Saturday? You bet your ass I am. And with forty two kilometres and months of training on the line I am also concerned (and convinced) that, come October 23, a bad marathon will spell the end of running for this girl.

So, with two months to go before the big day what am I supposed to do other than over analyze and fret about more stomach cramps (or worse!)?

This..

Yup, I am the girl that cried her eyes out on the side of the road after dropping out of a race a mere 48 hours ago and who now signed up for a 1/2 marathon in a month.

Am I crazy? Unless you are new to this blog you already know the answer to that.

Other than crazy I am also in need of redemption- a race that will reignite my passion for running and get me past the race anxiety that has come over me since the last two racing disasters.

No pressure though...

Realistically this isn't meant to be a PR setting race but instead a chance to have fun and enjoy the thrill of lining up at a start line with other people looking to cover the distance with a smile on their faces. To renew the woo, if you will.

Deep down, under all the doubt and disappointment I believe I still like running. Somewhere along the line I just forgot.

Despite evidence to the contrary, these are difference that can be reconciled

Can't you feel the love?

So tell me, how do you get over a disappointment? Do you believe you should hop back on the proverbial horse right after you fall off?

A Wedding and Some Pre-Race Ramblings....

As I mentioned yesterday I had the honor of being a guest the wedding of a longtime friend of the Boyfriend's (who I also know from high school). It was a beautiful day for that kind of occasion and on top of being lucky to have one another, I'd say the happy couple had a lot of  good fortune on their side!

The bride and groom looked gorgeous and were glowing with love and happiness. Don't you just love how you can feel the adoration at a wedding? I think that is pretty much my favorite part!

Oh and the food. This was an Italian/Peruvian wedding so the food was in abundance and it was absolutely amazing!! Everything from the yummy anti-pasto bar to the incredible dessert table was fantastic and kudos to the banquet hall for providing the best vegetarian main course I have ever had at an event (eggplant Parmesan...to die for!!)

And because I am running a crazy long race today (hello 30km or as the Boyfriend says, the 30,000 metre dash!) I only had a martini and a beer and then chugged water for the rest of the night. The discipline I exerted with chocolate martinis floating around every was astonishing!

The sweet table is another story. That was carb loading though *wink*

Speaking of the race, as I sit here typing this I am 5 hours away from the start time and starting to get that mix of excitement/nervousness. Thoughts running through my head are ranging anywhere from:

  • What the heck do I eat before a night race??
  • Holy sh*t its hot out there today!
  • 30km? Am I really running this??
  • 30km, I am totally running this!!
  • I wonder if the Boyfriend will bring me Cherry Blasters at the 20km mark??

The afternoon is going to be spent relaxing, trying to get some easily digested carbs into my body and packing for the race. I am pretty picky about that last one because there is nothing worse then getting to a race and realizing you forgot something (and with how nervous I get I wouldn't be surprised if I forgot shoes!!)

Next time we meet I will have a story to tell one way or the other. Fingers crossed that its a happy tale of a great race experience and a new PDR.

Wish me luck!!

(Also running the race are Cynthia and Aneta...go wish them luck too while you are at it!)

So tell me, what's your favorite part of a wedding? Are you running any races this weekend or coming up soon?

Feature Friday- Runners part 5

Today is a very exciting day for me. Not only is it Feature Friday (!!) but I am off work because I am getting ready to attend a wedding this afternoon. Another long weekend? Don't mind if I do!

This week I have please to showcase another hometown (Toronto) girl, so let's get to it!!

Laura - Scribbles and Sass

Laura is the ultimate firecracker. When she isn't busy being an ever-so-charming-sassy-pants she enjoys yoga, zumba, running, and any other type of fun fitness she can shake her booty to. Her fitness routine got a big wrench thrown in it last year when she suffered an ankle injury and forgot how to walk for a bit. Fun and games aside, she really loves fun and games. Check out her shenanigans at www.scribblesandsass.com or on Twitter @LaurBridge

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I started running in University while part of the cheerleading team. Before each practice we would take a spin around the track - I was looking at the basketball players - or through the stadium - I was looking at the football players - To keep my cardio up I ran on off days in between weight workouts.

What is one obstacle you overcame to become a stronger runner?

I'm still trying to overcome this one. About 15 months ago I shattered my ankle, just tore the thing to shreds. It was really disheartening because I was in pretty good shape, and was on track with my fitness. Because an ankle is such a vital joint to running it has been a hard and slow and long recovery to get me back onto the road.

What's your favorite running memory?

This is going to make me sound like an absolute Looney Tune, just stick with me. I run with my Nike+ kicks and sensor that hooks up to my iPod. It tracks how far and how fast I run and keeps it in nifty little charts. I was booking it one day and ran 6km in just over 30mins. I was so jacked up. I had never run that fast (and never have again) I got off the treadmill and was heading toward the water fountain when through my earbuds I heard: "Hi, I'm Tiger Woods - congratulations on running your fastest mile." I had no idea that this program did this...I may have lost it in the gym.

Are you training for any races at the moment?

Just training to run, not training to race.

What's your favorite way to refuel post-run

I'm going to be a brand-whore here - but I'm loving the Gen UCAN Chocolate protein shake. It's great for recovery, is easy on the tummy and it's chocolate.

What's one tip you would give to a new runner or someone coming back after a break?

I'm going to stick with what I know and give advice on coming back from an injury. Take your time and make sure you are healed, youngin', it will probably be longer than you want it to be. After you get doctor's clearance, start with short distances, but push yourself and continue to be awesome!

How amazing is she huh?? I can't believe she lives so close and yet we've never met IRL....yet. I definitely need to hook up for a run or a drink or pretty much anything with this awesome lady!!

If you want to be featured in the Runner Series all you have to do is email health.happiness.skinnyjeansATgmail.com. And remember, this is about runners on all levels so whether you are brand new and working on your first C25K or you've completed an Ironman, we want to hear from you!!!

Happy Friday everyone!!!!

Countdown to my 30km race- 1 more day!

Have you ever had a major injury disrupt to your life for a while? What do you think about Friday weddings- love 'em or hate 'em? (I love 'em..extra day off ..wahoo!)

Am I Mid Summer's Night Dreaming?

Alright, it's official, I am running 30 "omigod have I lost my freakin' mind" kilometres this Saturday. That's right, The Mid Summer's Night Run will be completed as originally planned, or I'll die trying (which at this stage is also entirely possible)

You heard it here first.

So why all the "oh I hate running, it makes me so sad" whining to turn around and profess such a grand intention only a few days later?

What can I say...I'm fickle like that.

But seriously, it came down to a few things.

  • I hate going back on a plan, even if its a plan I made with myself. In all reality I could have probably stayed home and ate Doritos and that vast majority of the planet would have been none the wiser, but I would have known and been slightly judgmental about it. Can't let that happen...
  • I'm not ready to give up on running (see the point above) and I need to get my ass back in the game. What better way then a race with people who are all suffering  battling through the same challenges as me. And where The Boyfriend is waiting at the finish line, expecting me not to show up in a cab.
  • I paid for the race. I like money..a lot and thus, I am not cool with throwing it away. And $65 is a lot for a t-shirt and a mini stick of deodorant.
  • I want to finish it. I mean, I am not really jazzed about the 29 kilometres I'll trudge through to get there, but that last kilometre is gonna feel so sweet. And crossing the finish line? Magical!
  • When a Boston Qualified friend suggested that I drop down to the 15km option I really didn't want to. That was my gut talking, because believe me if I was looking for a solid out that would have been it.

So yeah, I've got a few days to mentally prepare and physically get my body in racing/super long run shape. That means limited caffeine, very little alcohol (I'm attending a wedding on Friday or I would say none) a small lake worth of water, wholesome food and good quality sleep.

Then all I need is a miracle and I should be good to go!

Wish me luck!

And hey, to my Toronto running friends: If you are doing this race let me know so I can look for you and say help me hello!!

So tell me, how do you know when to trust your gut and when to listen to advice?

Feature Friday: Runners part 4

Well what do you know..here we are at the end of another week and its time once again for Feature Friday!

Once again I have two fabulous women with truly inspiring running stories to share with you. But enough outta me; here they are!

Amanda- Because Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Amanda is one busy gal from Richmond, Va. When she isn't out training for her first marathon this fall, she bounces between two jobs, studying for her LSAT, hanging out with her adorable Chihuahua mix Daisy and planning her next travel adventure. She's gone from C25K to training for the Marine Corps Marathon, which she will complete with her running team/support system "The Fat and the Furious" on October 30th.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I have always been overweight. I was a cheerleader in high school, but I was the largest and least athletic girl on the squad. I loved it though, but that was the extent of my athletics. I always said I would rather die than run. My motto was "I wouldn't run unless I was being chased, and even then, depending on what the person wants, they can just have it because I don't want to run!"

I graduated college and moved from Wisconsin to Virginia and found myself all alone and completely lazy. My parents came to visit for my 22nd birthday and we were at Monticello touring Thomas Jefferson's home...and I had to walk up this small hill. I was so out of breath. I was embarrassed and knew I had to make a change. I joined Weight Watchers and began running shortly after. Now when I say running, I use that term loosely. I began by using the Couch to 5K program and would "jog" for 30 seconds at a time. Eventually, I was able to complete my first 5K. I finished in 48 minutes and 46 seconds. Walkers were passing me. The cop car at the end of the race was right behind me. But I finished. It was the first time I had finished a 3.1 mile race and I was on top of the world. I didn't care that I was last, I had done something that I never thought I'd be able to do!

What is one obstacle you overcame to become a stronger runner?

Not giving up because I wasn't physically the typical runner. I have to work hard at it. I always will. I'm not a natural runner and I don't think I ever will be. But not giving up is something I have overcome. I want to walk, a lot, but I don't. One of my teammates even called me "Energizer" one day because no matter what, I just keep going.

What keeps you motivated to run?

My various running teams... The Fat and the Furious is my rock for this marathon training. My Aunt said it best, "Who knew a group of SLOW runners could become such FAST friends". It's true. 10 weeks ago, we were all strangers. And now, I don't know what I'd do without them. The man who even really pushed me into joining, has moved to New Orleans, but we all still keep in touch and plan to do the Marine Corps Marathon together still. Accountability by my running teams is what keeps me going!!

Do you have a running mentor or inspiration?

Yes, my Aunt Lori.  She began running about 11 years ago and lost over 115 pounds in the past 11 years in the process.  She inspired me to begin running and we've done everything from 5K, 10K, half marathon, and now marathon training together

What's your favorite running memory?

Finishing the McDonalds Half Marathon last year with my Aunt Lori. We ran the entire race, step by step, side by side. At the end, we joined hands and ran across that finish line together. I immediately burst into tears because I couldn't believe what we had just accomplished.

What top 3 things do you love most about running?
  • the feeling when i finish...i feel so accomplished!
  • i love that its a solitary sport that i can also do with a team...everyone runs their own race
  • i can do it anywhere, any time, no excuses

Aneta- Checking It Off the Bucket List

Aneta is an avid runner from Richmond Hill, Canada who blogs over at www.runningbucket.com. She started the blog under the name Confessions of a Runner, but after a year,  decided to change the path of her blog and make it a big bucket list of her running goals. (You can check out that bucket list HERE.) Slowly, but surely, and with fierce determination she is making her way through all of it. When she isn't running she loves spending time with her loving boyfriend.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I started running in the summer of 2008 after a big breakup with a boyfriend. My first run was just a few days after my breakup and it was one of the first things that I did after crying in bed for a few days. I remember this run very clearly. I had to go send the RSVP for my best friend's wedding and I told myself that if I can run to the post office without stopping, I can do anything. The post office is about a 1.5k from my parents' house and I made it all the way there. I did not stop, I did not take walking breaks....I just ran. When i got to the post office, I mailed the RSVP and sat on the ground in front and decided to run a race. And i did just that by running my first race - a Half Marathon in October 2008.

What's one running pet peeve or drawback?

With all the technology and gadgets, sometimes I forget to run for the love of running. I worry too much about pace and time and distance that I forget that I run because I can, and should enjoy it more!

What's your favorite running memory?

I have a few fave memories:

  • My first Half marathon - it was such a great accomplishment in a short time. I felt so proud and so strong, I felt like I could accomplish anything! I wore my race medal to work that whole week! haha
  • Running a 5k with a friend - My friend, Just K, ran her first race ever in May 2010 and running beside her made me love the sport even more!
  • Walking a half marathon with the bf's sister - walking a half marathon might be harder then running one. But with good company and a camera in hand, it was a party!
  • Running my first Full Marathon - this day I will remember for the rest of my life. Despite the injury, the pain, the tears, the wall that i hit at mile 18 - it was sooooo worth it. And knowing that people were waiting for me at the end, was unbelievable and so motivational.

Are you training for any races at the moment?

I am currently training for a 30 K which is on Saturday, August 20th. and my big goal race is the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon on October 16, 2011 where I will try one more time to get that sub-2 hour time.

What is your favorite distance to run?

I like a nice 5 or 10 miler. (8-16 k). Its not too short where you have to sprint, but not long enough that you have to worry too much about too much training or nutrition during the race.

What's one tip you would give to a new runner or someone coming back after a break?

My one tip to a new runner would be to keep at it. Running is very simple, yet very complicated. Practice makes you better! You will get faster, you will get stronger and you will be able to run longer, I promise. But it all takes time. Walking is ok. Actually, taking walking breaks is good. It prevents injury and will allow you to run for longer distances. And don't forget to rest. Rest is important for recovery and to grow strong muscles. And enjoy it! Smile at the end of your run. One of my fave running quotes comes from Jeff Galloway, founder of the Running Room: "When I finish a run, every part of me is smiling"

And once again, I am completely inspired by these awesome ladies!!

If you want to be featured in the Runner Series all you have to do is email health.happiness.skinnyjeansATgmail.com. And remember, this is about runners on all levels so whether you are brand new and working on your first C25K or you've completed an Ironman, we want to hear from you!!!

Happy Friday!

So tell me, do you have a bucket list? If you do whats one thing that is still on it that you plan to tick off this year?

Two New Things: A PDR and the Best Fro Yo EVER!!!

I woke up bright and early thig morning (on a Saturday, blech) for a scheduled long run that I had committed to completing with Cynthia. Because I had been having such a hard time actually getting out the door for my long runs lately I knew firm plans with a running buddy was just the thing I needed.

Breakfast was munched in the car because I was desperate for every extra minute of sleep I could get. Judging by those eyes, I certainly needed a few more!

After meeting with Cynthia and giving my Garmin a little extra charge we headed out. The plan was a 24km out and back along the Lakeshore in Toronto. Easy Peasey, right?

Umm...right.

Or not.

I am not a fan of running (walking or breathing) in the humidity and it was obvious to me from a few kilometres in that it was going to be very warm and sticky. The sun refused to duck behind any clouds, leaving us out in the open, women versus the scorching heat.

I (unlike Cynthia, who is a hot weather running freakin' superstar) will lose that standoff each and every time.

At least I am winning at being a totally hot running chick! Err..actually scratch that accolade too while you are at it.

Getting to the half way point wasn't completely horrible. I knew the humidity was getting me so I took some walk breaks and slowed my pace as Cynthia charged on ( I am positive she was a desert roadrunner in another life)

The way back was another story. I had rolled up my shirt in an effort to try to get my skin ventilated because my body felt like it was on fire, but I am pretty sure some significant damage was already done. I was hot, my legs were heavy and my mind slowly going to the dark place.

Uh oh, the dark place.

With every step I started to hate the sun, my socks, iPod, water bottle, fuel belt and ear phones even more and I was seriously (and I mean seriously) contemplating whether the marathon is a good idea for me.

If given the opportunity to drop out while I was at kilometre 20 you bet your ass I would have!

So let's fast forward, knowing that the run (or at least the back half) was one of these sucky "I hate this, why do I do it to myself" kinds of runs but I have been at this long enough to know that they happen and you move on.

On the bright side, I did get a PDR to tuck under my much aggrieved running belt: 23km. In your face 21km half marathon..in your face!

Oh and I didn't quit the marathon when the chance did arise. Yay me!

Now for my favorite part of my entire life day

Self-serve frozen yogurt with a mega stocked toppings bar? Where have you been all my life??

To say that we were excited for this trip, which was months in the making by the way, is an understatement.

Think kids going to Disneyland and a birthday party on Christmas morning and you've pretty much got it understood.

I got cookies and cream and banana split fro yo with pretty much every topping they had. Between the giggling and squealing and the overload of yogurt goodness the teenagers working there must have thought we were as stoned as they were (tasteless stereotype alert!!)

We made sure to tell them we had just run for a bazillion hours which only served to make them think that we were completely crazy given how hot it was outside. They probably still think drugs had something to do with it to.

Nope! All natural runner's high baby!!

And a touch of sugar high when we were done too.

I'm in heaven! And it's walking distance from my house.

There goes future hopes of that hot runner chick award.

Oh well...I'll drown my sorrows in fuzzy peaches and red velvet fro yo instead. Totally hot is way overrated anyway.

So tell me, what's something new you tried recently? Have you have had self-serve fro yo??

8/5/11

Feature Friday- Runners part 3

It's Feature Friday time! (Can you tell I was watching Jersey Shore last night or what??)

I don't know about you, but Friday's have taken on a whole new level of excitement for me now that I get to spotlight so many amazing runners! I am so inspired when I read through all these stories and I eagerly count down the days because I can't wait to share them.

Here we go with two more amazing women who have embraced running as a part of their busy lives!

Lauren- Mmmbopping to the Finish Line!

Lauren is 26 years old and lives in the suburbs with her husband, who is affectionately referred to in the blogosphere as "Goose." (Don't worry, it's not his real name.) She is passionate about many things, and still trying to figure out exactly what she want to be when she grows up. Most of the time, you’ll find her running, biking, and swimming, in no particular order, training for as many races as she can cram into her weekends. She also enjoys rocking out to Hanson (yes, the band that hit it big with “Mmmbop” in 1997), watching Glee with her husband, giggling with her girl friends, and drinking way too much Diet Coke. She blogs about all that and more at Forward is a Pace.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

When I was in high school, my dad and aunt started running marathons for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. I thought they were incredible, and I loved cheering them on at the races. Spectating at marathons was exciting and fun. I was in awe of everyone running. I was also convinced that they were all super-human and I could never be like them.

I was still getting pep-talks from my dad to survive the mile run in gym class.

In college, I’d occasionally sign up for a 5k and just hobble my way through it pathetically. I didn’t train at all, which made running 3.1 miles kind of a nightmare for the girl who never worked out.

And then my husband’s brother ran the 2006 Chicago Marathon.

Since I hadn’t grown up idolizing him as I had my dad, I couldn’t make excuses anymore. If Nick could do it, so could I. On that day, I decided I was going to run the 2007 Chicago Marathon.

I ran for a few months without telling anyone, and when I was sure I could do it, I told my parents. They took me shopping for my first real pair of running shoes, and the rest is history.

What's one running pet peeve or drawback?

I have made a lot of friends that I am incredibly grateful for through running. However, I think that when you surround yourself with runners, it’s easy to discount your amazing successes. A marathon feels like a huge accomplishment until several of your friends are Ironmen. Sometimes I have to take a step back and remind myself that I have done some pretty awesome things!

What is one obstacle you overcame to become a stronger runner?

A challenge I deal with on a daily basis is my ulcerative colitis. Simply put, UC is an autoimmune disease that makes it difficult for my body to digest food. It also causes other problems like arthritis. In addition to planning my long runs around available bathrooms, I had to learn to really listen to my body. For me, taking an extra rest day and skipping a track workout sometimes makes me stronger. Giving my body the rest it needs keeps me healthier, and I find my run times dropping, too!

What's your favorite running memory?

Oh gosh, it’s so hard to choose just one. If I had to pick one, it’d be crossing the finish line at the Nike Women’s Marathon in 2008. I trained for and started running the Chicago Marathon in 2007, but it was cancelled mid-race due to extreme conditions and I didn’t get to finish. It felt like I’d been training for two years for the 2008 marathon! I was sobbing so hard when I called my parents after the race that they thought something bad had happened. In reality, I was just so relieved and proud to have finished!

Do you have a running mentor or inspiration?

My friend Barb has been both a mentor and an inspiration to me.  When I first started running, she sent me a care package with socks, a mix of her favorite running songs, and my very own training schedule for my first 8k.  Since then, we’ve run many races together, and I even saw her become an Ironman!  She is the one who coined my mantra, “Forward is a pace.”

What keeps you motivated to run?

At this point, I can’t imagine not running. I just love it!

Michelle- A Mom on the Go!

Meet Michelle, a busy mom from Orlando, FL (where it is hot about 75% of the year!!)  who blogs over at crazyrunninglegs. Everyday she balances running with a busy family life (1 husband, 2 adorable kids), a full time job, and awesome friends. On top of all that Michelle also loves cooking, reading,  watching an obscene amount of TV (her words, not mine!), and sipping on a glass of wine (or a margarita). Her motto is to live life in moderation - life is meant to be enjoyed! For her, running provides balance in a busy world!

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I started running in college when I was obsessed about my weight. I didn't run more than 3 miles and it was never for fun. I would quit and then pick it up again sporadically. Before I got pregnant with my first baby I started running on the treadmill. I got up to 6 miles and though I hated every minute of it, I was proud of myself for running that far/long. My REAL addiction to running began about a year and a half ago. I started running outside because it was quick and convenient. Something I needed with two kids and no time. Next thing I knew, I had signed up for my first half marathon with my friend Paula (Disney Wine and Dine) and I was hooked!

What top 3 things do you love most about running?

The endorphins, how awesome it makes my legs look, and the focus it gives me on the rest of my life. If I don't run, I don't feel centered.

Are you training for any races at the moment?

My first 15k (Miracle Miles in September), my first marathon (RnR Savannah), and my next half (RnR Vegas).

What's your favorite running memory?

PRing at the First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon in March. I was aiming for a sub-2 time and I came in at 1:58. Running through the crowd knowing I was going to achieve my goal was such a great feeling!

What keeps you motivated to run?

My family and friends, my blog, the friends I've made, the awesome running community

What's one tip you would give to a new runner or someone coming back after a break?

Concentrate on distance/endurance first -- the speed will come if you work hard at it. Also, the best way to increase speed is consistency

How inspired to lace up your sneakers are you right now?? Amazing!

Feature Friday- Runners part 2

Here we are with another edition of Feature Friday which highlights the exciting experiences of runners from all different backgrounds and experience levels.

This week we have two more terrific women who found running at a tough time in their lives and have been pounding the pavement ever since. So without futher adieu.......

Brooke- A Single Gal on the Move

Brooke is a 32 years old and live in Richmond, Va. She is recently separated, which lead to her journey of self discovery, and the commitment to training for a marathon which she will cross off her bucket list this November! She works full time at a fine jewelry store that's been a part of Richmond for over 100 years. When she's not running you'll find her to relaxing with yoga or a glass of wine with friends. Her favorite quote is "The pain of discipline is far less than the pain of regret"

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I started running May 2011. I have always been active and gone to the gym but running had never been my thing. I would attempt to run and would usually stop/give up 5 minutes in. I signed up for my first 10k and decided to just go for it...showed up for the race with no training and just told my self have fun, and walk if you need to. I was AMAZED by the adrenaline that pumped through me. The excitement that came from the cheering fans was overwhelming. From that moment I was hooked...I decided its time to train for a marathon.

What keeps you motivated to run?

November 12, 2011---the day I will run my first marathon. Its also very motivating to see such improvement from the first day of training.

Running Pet Peeve

Running with an IPOD- Which I cant believe I am even saying??!! When I first started running I was completely attached to my IPOD. I couldnt even imagine running with out it, I NEEDED that intense beat and loud music to keep me going. When I started training for the marathon they made the rule, No IPODS. I was devasted...how would I ever run without it?! They wanted us to focus on the roads we were running and most importantly talk to the people in our group so that we could have a group of running friends. I gave up my IPOD and it was the best decision ever made. I have met an amazing group of lifelong friends. But most importantly it allows be to focus on my breath, the beautiful surroundings I am running through, and natures noices. I know my IPOD would drive me crazy now!

Running Inspiration?

All the amazing men and women in my marathon training group, and every runner out there. They have all inspired me through their strength and commitment.

One tip for New Runner

Stick with it...you will be truly amazed with your accomplishments and what you can achieve.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I started running a year & a half ago, compliments of heartbreak. My ex boyfriend & I had just split up when I met a girl who was training for a marathon, she suggested I take up running as a way to release some of my emotions. I had never ran before but it seemed like a healthy outlet so I decided to find a race, sign up & go. But I didn’t start off with a 5K, instead, I signed up for a half marathon – go big or go home! After I crossed the finish line I got a glimpse of the infamous “runners high” & have been running ever since.

What keeps you motivated to run?

I feel very fortunate to be active & be able to run. I’m lucky enough to live in Florida where we can
run year round (though Summers are not as enjoyable aka way too hot!). When you’re constantly
surrounded with sunshine & palm trees how could you not want to be outside? I love enjoying the
beautiful days by going on a run.

What is one obstacle you overcame to become a stronger runner?

When I first started running I couldn’t run a mile without feeling out of breath; now I’m training for my
first marathon. By sticking to my training & getting out there I’ve been able to build endurance, cardio
vascular health, stronger legs and a deeper love of the sport. I feel like a much stronger runner today.

Are you training for any races at the moment?

I’m currently training for the NYC Marathon (I got selected, so lucky!), which is on November 6. I’m
currently just a few weeks into training & have a long journey ahead. It’s very exciting & scary at the
same time.

What's your favorite way to refuel post-run?

Confession: I’m slightly obsessed with smoothies. After a long run I love having a big, fruity protein
smoothie. My current favorite combination is water, ice, peaches, pineapple, vanilla whey protein
powder & a drizzle of agave – tastes like summer!

What's one tip you would give to a new runner or someone coming back after a break?

When in doubt, run. When you think you can’t keep going push yourself, you can & will finish. Pride is
forever. These are my mantras & I encourage all runners to find their own (or borrow mine) & hold on to them as they run.

Thank you so much to these awesome ladies for giving us an inside look at their amazing journey!!

If you are a runner (novice to elite) and want to me featured in an upcoming edition of this series send me an email at health.happiness.skinnyjeansATgmail.com

Happy Friday!

So tell me, have you ever started something new like running to get through a challenging time in your life?

Ode to a Runner's Boyfriend

There is something extra special about a man who will....

See this face and think "beauty" not "tomato head"

Watch this and not run from your assumed masochist ways

Keep quiet about the fact that, while you once smelled nice most of the time, these days you kinda stink

Accept that workout gear accessorized with a headband is dressed up now

Deal with the fact that a 6am wake up call for a Sunday long run usually means a 6:15 "have you seen my keys/running belt/iPod?" wake up call for him

Accept that this is considered a hairstyle (and that taking pictures of that back of your own head is really, really hard)

Understand that taking a "shot" doesn't have the same meaning it once did

Come to terms with that fact that you'd rather spend money on races than pedicures because the polish just rubs off any way. He won't even hide your flip flops when things start getting really "rough"

Learn to be okay with the fact that you are certifiably obsessed with your cats. (Okay so that's more a me thing then a running thing but its special all the same)

For everything you do, this one is for you.

Wait, I feel like I am ripping off a commercial or something...

Hmm..

Oh screw it...thanks times a million and yeah, I love you lots and lots and all that stuff.

Isn't love grande??

So tell me, what does your partner or family put up with because they love you?

Marathon Training Week Seven- But I Just Don't Wanna

Hey friends! How are you surviving through all this heat?? (assuming of course that it is hot where you are) Today was the first day in what feels like forever that I didn't absolutely melt when I hit the sidewalk. Humid weather, like the stuff we've been having here in the Toronto area, completely zaps me of energy so I am looking forward to some more seasonl temperatures in the next few weeks.

Here's a look at how my training went last week:

Monday: Strength training (1 hour 15 min)
Tuesday: 5km run, Spinning (30min)
Wednesday: Elliptical training (1 hour) Jillian Michaels workout DVD (45 min)
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 2km run, Elliptical (15min)
Saturday: Spinning (50min)
Sunday: Spinning/Strength (50min)

Total distance ran: 7km

Here's what I learned:

Sometimes I don't want to run. Like really don't want to run. Marathon training or not, I am simply not going to torture myself for 2 hours if I am actually dreading my long run. So this morning I opted out and I am okay with it. This is about my health and my happiness more than anything else.

Finding what sweaty form of activity you love is a crucial backup plan for "The thought of running makes me cringe" type days. This weekend it was some hardcore spinning. It was a great choice!

Marathon training is 5 months of your life and interests are bound to change. I am confident that I will be back in the running game next week but until then I am all about making my body and mind feel good. I mean really, the Olympic gold medal isn't at stake if I skip a run here and there right?

Sometimes you have to focus on the positives of summer (trips to the cottage, ice cream, thunderstorms) because when the thermometer creeps to 48C/118F there is a LOT to be sour faced about. (I am so not a super hot weather girl)

All crankiness about heat and lack of motivation to run aside, I really love to break a sweat (except when I am sitting on a bus in traffic and its 2 million degrees but I digress...) I went to spinning twice this weekend because I really wanted to get my exercise groove on. I love that!

Thoughts this week: I don't live and breathe running the way some people do and I am perfectly fine with that. When I love it I will do it and when I don't I will scale back. Like most things, the relationship has its ebbs and flows and I am prepared to go with it. The most important part to me is that I feel driven, passionate, motivated and accomplished. I will get there however I can, as long as I get there!

Hope you all had a great weekend and managed to stay cool!

So tell me, what is your favorite non-running way to get your exercise groove on? Do you ever love doing something one day and secretly kind of hate it the next?

Feature Friday: Runners

Welcome to my new series Feature Friday which will showcase some really awesome people who add to their sheer awesomeness by also being runners!

Each week I will feature a few runners with all different experiences and exciting stories to tell.

Are you ready to meet some totally kick-ass people? Of course you are!

Katy: The Singing Runner

Katy  is a 21-year-old college senior who blogs about healthy living, running, food, and social media at The Singing Runner. Katy has ran two half-marathons and is currently training for her first marathon. In her spare time, she loves singing, acting, traveling, cooking, and writing.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I have participated in numerous sports since elementary school and even did cross-country for a year in high school (but hated it!). It was not until last June that I laced up my shoes and started running again... and the rest is history!

What is one obstacle you overcame to become a stronger runner?

This past spring, I developed a left shin splint, which kept me out of running for six weeks. I had intensive physical therapy two times a week for those six weeks. Not only was I in physical pain with the injury, but it also took an emotional toll on me.

What top 3 things do you love most about running?

Crazy strong and sexy legs ;), being considered by others as “one of those crazy running people”, and pushing myself further than I ever thought imaginable.

Are you training for any races at the moment?

I am currently training for my first marathon, which will be the Chicago Marathon on October 9th!

What's your favorite running memory?

Definitely when I crossed the finish line of my first half-marathon: the 2011 Disney Half-Marathon in January. I had battled through injuries and setbacks during my training, but I powered throughand broke my expectations running it in 1:56:20!

What's one tip you would give to a new runner or someone coming back after a break?

Talk to others about your running progress! Most of my friends are not runners but I talk to them all the time about my latest run and marathon training progress. It may not be their “cup of tea,” but it keeps me accountable (to go out and get the runs done!) and motivated. Who knows, you may inspire them to get out there and join you!

Cynthia: The Newlywed Duathlete

Cynthia is a women with a thirst for life and a new challenge. 2011 has been a big year for her as she was married to the love of her life in April, competed in her first duathlon in June and is training for her first marathon this fall. When she's not out running she loves to spend time with her hubby enjoying a glass of wine or taking her black Lab Penny for a walk in the park. Cynthia blogs about her active life over at Cynthia's Adventures.

When did you start running and what inspired you to start?

I started in 2008 in preparation for a 5K relay at work. I was always a sprinter so it was crazy hard to run 5k!!

What's one running pet peeve or drawback?

Rest days!! Your body needs it but its hard when it falls on the perfect running day!

What is your favorite distance to run?

For now, a 10K. Easy enough to try and push yourself a little!

What is one obstacle you overcame to become a stronger runner?

Doing more cross-training. I used to think run, run, run. Now I only run 3-4 times a week.

What's your favorite running memory?

Training for and finishing my 30K race in March 2011. It was such an amazing feeling to have completed it!!

Would you rather be able to run 5km really quickly or 50km at a slow and steady pace?

50Km at a slow and steady pace! Hey that's an ultra, wouldn't you be excited!? :)

You can catch much more of Cynthia and Katy on their blogs so be sure to check them out!!

Are you a runner (any experience level) and want to appear on Feature Friday? Send me an email at health.happiness.skinnyjeansATgmail.com and I will send you more information!!
