Eat, Sleep, Read...

Ugh, it's been a yucky week for me friends. If you've been following me on Twitter you might have noticed a lot of chatter (twittering?) about my lack of energy and my need for sleep. For the last week I have been just exhausted. Sleeping for 11 hours, 3 hour naps, nothing was helping and something was definitely wrong. Top that with nausea and muscle aches and I was just stumped

Was it my iron levels? A flu creeping up? A *gasp* unplanned pregnancy? I wasn't sure but all I did know was that running (or exercise of any kind) really wasn't really in the cards for me. Not good! After 15 months of consistent and dedicated fitness and with a training plan in place for a 1/2 marathon in September I wasn't exactly stoked at being sidelined for no apparent reason

So what is a girl to do when running isn't an option? This girl slept, and slept and slept some more. She also ate (the good bad and the ugly...we won't go there) and she shopped!

Lucky for me my one day a week part-time job happens to be at a clothing store so I get a discount ...cha-ching!

I also spent the weekend Puggle sitting for friends while they were away on their honeymoon. With Barkley gone to the cottage with the Boyfriend I was grateful to still have a cuddly canine to keep me company.

And I also used some of the unexpected downtime to start Eat, Pray. Love. If you read Oh She Glows (and honestly who doesn't?) you'll know that Angela is also reading it and has been posting some thoughts on some her favorite parts of the book .

To be honest those posts were what turned me onto the book. I had seen countless people reading it on the subway and I had heard rave reviews about it on television but I was never really interested until I read what it was really about and how it can get you thinking about your own life (and boy does it ever!) Currently I am following Liz through her journey in India, where she finds devotion, prayer and meditation to be another path to self-discovery. Very inspiring! I plan to post about one or two of my favorite ideas and quotes but I'll save that for another time.

So I'm not really sure if running will be back on the agenda today, or even tomorrow for that matter. I miss it but I need to listen to my body. I'm not pregnant (phew!) so there might be something else throwing me off and until I can figure it out I should be careful. If I do run (and I really, really want to) I will take it easy and not push myself too much. Here's hoping.....

So tell me, what do you like to do when you find yourself with some unexpected downtime? Have you had to take a break from exercise and if so, what did you do to fill the void?

  1. It's no fun to be under the weather. I wasn't feeling great for a couple of weeks recently and was sad to miss my running as well, especially since I was just getting into it. I've only started recently. So addicting though!

I hope you start feeling better soon!

I've been thinking of picking up Eat, Pray, Love as well. Angela's posts about it have got me wanting to read it!

  2. So sorry that this horrible 'whatever it is' is still bothering you. Must be some type of flu or perhaps your body is just simply burnt out.Props though for doing the right thing and resisting the runs when you know your body can't take them right now.

When I injured my foot, I was just getting back into the swing of exercise after a little hiatus and it was extremely difficult to keep myself down. I focused on eating as healthy as possible and using that time to plan out meals and future workouts.

Eat, Pray, Love is next up on my reading list! Glad you are enjoying it.

  3. Sorry to hear that you're still not feeling great. It sounds like your body is definitely looking for rest and relaxation. A good book is the way to go. Don't try to tackle any house projects or anything...hope you're back at 'em soon!

  4. Oh my goodness, this is exactly how I felt last week! I unfortunately was hit with a migraine on Wednesday and spent the entire day in bed. It was weird because it came on the day right after my very last day of classes (and university in general). I've been told that sometimes migraines happen right after your body lets go of a ton of stress, so maybe that was it. Anyways, I slept for the majority of that day, straight thru the night, and I had naps for about 2 hours on the following 2 days! I think sometimes though, it's just our bodies' way of telling us that we need to rest. I hope you're feeling better though.

I'm also on the India portion of EPL and I'm loving it so far! It has inspired some posts for me as well I'm sure!

  5. I like to simply revel in the moment and relax. Usually with a good book. So I say rest up and bring us some reviews of EPL! :)

Do you have any idea yet what could be causing this?

  6. hmm.....my husband always tells me when i feel like garbage, it's because i'm over-training. (is that possible for you?) i also know what it's like to be out on the sidelines and it's pure TORTURE! in fact, i was out for a full year with a hip injury. not sure how i filled in the gap (i think i walked a lot. but it's just not the same!) hope you'll get better soon :)

  7. When I can't exercise, I turn to reading as well!! I have never read that book for the same reason, sometimes when you hear so much about it, it is a bit of an overkill. But it does sound good!

  8. I ususally spend my downtime reading or watching movies. I always have these lofty ideas for the weekend (touring DC museums, a 12 mile hike), but when Saturday rolls around I'm exhausted from my training. Thus lazy rec time ensues! Oh well!

  12. That puggle is too much! How cute! I hope you are feeling better soon. It stinks when you can't quiet put your finger on what is going on.

I'll be interested to hear what your final verdict is of the book.It wasn't my favorite book, but I did enjoy it enough to see the movie in the future!

  13. Sorry to hear you've been feeling gross and tired. I hope that all the extra rest you've been taking is exactly what your body needs, and that you'll be back feeling like yourself before long.

I read Eat, Pray, Love when it first came out and thought it was amazing. It's definitely a book that gets you to re-examine things in your own life, and her writing really draws you in. I sometimes re-read snippets of it, but I really want to sit down and read through the whole book again.

  14. Sorry about your health, but it is always fun to go shopping, something that a girl should go do often! I also work at a clothing store and it is always great to get discounts on cute tops and skinny jeans.
